DHEA FAQ's

What is DHEA?

DHEA is the hormone dehydrepiandosterone, made by the adrenal glands.  It is converted into androgens and estrogens in the cells. Whether it is converted into androgens (male hormones) or estrogens (female hormones) depends on the person’s own sex, age, individual condition and other individual factors.  Some researchers have found that taking antioxidants with DHEA yields improved results.

What are the anti-aging benefits of taking DHEA?

DHEA supplementation has been shown to result in increased serum IGF-1 levels, increased muscle mass, higher bone density, and smoother thicker skin.

Can DHEA help with depression?

Many people have experienced an improvement in their overall mood and sense of well-being with DHEA supplementation.  It could be that depression, in many cases, is related to unusually low levels of DHEA and other important hormones. > > more info click here

Can DHEA help with lupus?

Studies have shown that DHEA supplementation provides significant (but not complete) relief from the symptoms of lupus for some people.

What is the connection between DHEA and Alzheimer’s?

Recent studies have shown Alzheimer’s patients have very low levels of DHEA compared to healthy people the same age.  It is too early to know if there is a causal connection here.

Are there any side effects?

Not at the dosage levels in the products we carry.  Very high doses, several hundred mg. per day or more, have been associated with heart arrythmia in humans, and resulted in liver damage in fish and rats when the animal equivalent dosage is administered.

Who should take DHEA?

Most people over 30 have DHEA levels well below their levels from only a few years before.  For many of these people, DHEA supplementation offers the promise of a more youthful body and an improved life.  However, men with prostate enlargement or prostate cancer and women on estrogen therapy should consult a physician before taking DHEA, because DHEA is converted into androgens and estrogen in the body, and will have an impact on the levels of those hormones.  Do not take DHEA if you are pregnant or nursing.

How much should I take, and when?

Most people prefer to take one capsule in the morning, because DHEA tends to have an energizing effect on most people.  Some prefer to take DHEA in the evening before bed.  Take DHEA with antioxidants to get the maximum benefit.
